Track Bike Criteriums Are The New Alleycats

Want to see what alleycats are all about Lucas Brunelle's film LINE OF SIGHT is a full tilt one hour adrenaline rush. Once you watch the first minute - that's it - you'll be hooked." I'd forgotten how addictive MASH TV is. Then I spotted this clip from Dosnoventa, the brand which originated from the fixed gear shop in Barcelona, C.R.E.A.M - Cash Rules Everything Around Me. Checking into what Dosnoventa have been up to recently, I found a tee they'd made up which read "track bike criteriums are the new alleycats". The film features the Dosnoventa Team at the Red Hook Crit in Milan back in October. One hundred riders started - twenty seven finished.

What's great about this is how cyclists are taking the sport back to it's roots. No fancy gear or race formats and everyone's having fun. Fixed wheel bikes, no brakes, racing around the streets of Milano. No pro racers on multi geared multi dollar carbon bikes with brakes and big paychecks. The only disadvantage to racing on a fixie in a street crit is, you can't get the things leant over too far for higher speed cornering. Clever course design can counter this.

Okay so there's a stack of you out there who've asked, what's an alleycat? How can "track bike criteriums be the new alleycats", when some aren't up to speed on what an alleycat is? For something to the be the new version of something older, you'd think the older version would be widely known first! Alleycats are a clandestine form of racing though, so not everyone's going to know about it. This new age of cycling sure is moving that fast - here goes. Basically for a straight up description, it's like a fast paced form of urban orienteering on fixed wheel bikes, originally devised by cycle messengers, now popularised and events run anywhere. Local Brisbane rider and international (Asia Pacific fixed gear champs at Shinzen in China) - alleycat champ - Gypsy describes one form of alleycat racing like this -  you get given a map with check points on it you just check in at all the check points......and just go nuts and race around the city. Not all alleycats follow exactly that format, it depends on the organisers preferences and which city around the globe.

Instead of race numbers, racers are given spoke cards which are artworked for the specific event. The racers number is marked on the spoke card. So if you've ever wondered why some bikes look like there's half a deck of cards stashed in the spokes, it's the alleycat spoke cards.
